Understanding Rodent Damage and Behavior

Shrews, moles, and voles are small rodents capable of causing significant damage to gardens by eating bark, gnawing roots, and creating tunnels. Their activities often result in visible surface runways and damage to garden plants and young trees.

Signs of a Rodent Problem

Skunk spray can help with outdoor odor and help you get rid of skunks. Attract skunks, baking soda, remove skunks, young skunks.

Commonly Asked Questions

What are the signs of a vole or mole problem in my yard?

First off, although voles, moles and shrews look similar, they are very different.  Moles and shrews are strict insectivores feeding primarily on earth worms, grubs and other insects.  Voles are strict herbivores eating seeds and plant matter including stems and roots systems of plants.  Moles excavate underground tunnels and borrows. Common indicators of a mole infestation or mole activity include raised tunnels in the soil, small holes in lawns.  Common evidence of vole activity are visible trails through grass or mulch and small golf ball sized burrows systems. You may also see vole damage near tree trunks, shrubs, or crops, where these rodents gnaw or feed on roots and bark, especially during winter.  Shrews are more opportunistic in their travel roots and will often access interior areas through similar access points as mice.  A sure sign of shrew activity is the observation of a “toilet area” where these animals leave their little squiggly shaped droppings.

How fast can vole or mole populations increase?

Voles like mice, can increase rapidly, producing multiple litters per year. Without proper habitat modification and preventive measures, vole numbers grow quickly, creating extensive yard and orchard damage over time.

What methods do you use to control shrews, moles, and voles?

Our wildlife pest control experts use targeted trapping techniques such as snap traps, baits, and strategic trap placement in tunnels and active ground areas. We strive for the safety of non target species like owls, hawks, and snakes, which naturally help reduce vole populations through predation.

How can I prevent voles and moles from returning?

Long-term prevention includes habitat modification — we help eliminate weeds, thin dense cover, and remove excess litter around trees, lawns, and landscaping. These steps make your yard less appealing to voles, moles, and other pests, reducing nest sites and hiding spots.

Do voles, shrews and moles hibernate in the winter?

No,voles, shrews, and moles do not fully hibernate, but their activity often continues beneath snow or underground turf. They use their long snouts and small eyes to tunnel through soil in search of grubs and insects even during colder months, which can result in persistent vole damage and lawn disruption.

Are your rodent control methods safe for pets and wildlife?

Yes. Our pest control approach focuses on safe, targeted treatments to minimize risk to pets, squirrels, and other wildlife. We use professional-grade repellents and controlled bait applications designed for effectiveness and short term protection while maintaining ecological balance in your habitat.
